It happened.
Some people work their whole lives to send a message, only for that message to be lost in the rhetoric, prejudices and closed-mindedness of the very people the message is aimed toward. Some great people die, never having caused the change in the world they worked for.
Medgar Evers. Rosa Parks. Malcom X. Dr. Martin Luther King.
As of today, these people and many others have no longer been lost in vain. Their lives mattered. Their messages have been realized and justified. What they worked so hard for has happened.
I know that this election is not supposed to be about race, and it shouldn't be. But like it or not, it IS an element. And that shouldn't be ignored. While I believe that Obama's job in the white house transcends race, I would like to offer the following sentiment...
As a white person to the African American community in the United States -- congratulations, from the bottom of my heart. You've taken a huge step. Forget moving to the East Side to a deluxe apartment in the sky. You're moving into the White House. It took a long time and a lot of struggling. It's long over due. But it has happened. And I think you all deserve a big high five.
I think the whole country deserves a big high five. We've looked past petty prejudices that would have prevented a man like Obama from being president just 20 years ago and we've done what we believe would be the best thing for the country.
It's been so long since I've felt it that it seems odd -- But right now, I'm very proud to be an American.
